Governance
From Wikipedia: Governance is the act of governing. It relates to decisions that define expectations, grant power, or verify performance. It consists of either a separate process or part of management or leadership processes. These processes and systems are typically administered by a government.
In the case of a business or of a non-profit organisation, governance relates to consistent management, cohesive policies, guidance, processes and decision-rights for a given area of responsibility. For example, managing at a corporate level might involve evolving policies on privacy, on internal investment, and on the use of data.
To distinguish the term governance from government: “governance” is what a “government” does. It might be a geo-political government (nation-state), a corporate government (business entity), a socio-political government (tribe, family etc.), or any number of different kinds of government, but governance is the physical exercise of management power and policy, while government is the instrument (usually collective) that does it. The term government is also used more abstractly as a synonym for governance, as in the Canadian motto, “Peace, Order and Good Government“.
Good Government
What is a ‘good government’ and how can we support such an entity? We are a global society, but we have no effective global authority or leadership that brings everyone together to help each other. It is a simple solution to bring the considerable resources and delivery systems to bear on eradicating disease, homelessness, hunger and poverty. We’ve all seen the cartoons and graphics spoofing defense budget spending. All it takes is a little redirection.
Harmony among people and planet starts with a catharsis of the chaos in our hearts and minds first, then in our personal and professional relationships. When how we do something means more than the mere act of doing, we will see amazing results in the kinds of deliverables industry produces. We may not need to cripple the corporatocracy, only to shift it’s focus back to what matters… people – each other.
Now the absence of religious rhetoric and political pontifications is with purpose. There is no need to separate because we are united in the actions of collaboration for harmony and sustainability. Prophetic projections of an apolcalypse comes true – a revelation happens when we use our arms for hugging, our intellect for life-friendly purpose and our spirit to commune with a new living awareness and experience. It all sounds so simple. What if it is?
We intend to align with the newly released ISO 26000 Social Responsibility Standards and encourage their wide-spread use in 21st Century business practices. Harmony among people and planet is the successful negotiation and transcendence of the chaos we’re experiencing into a new world order of accountability and responsibility toward human and planetary needs for sustainability.
