Why Planetary Citizens Exists
Transparency matters.
The ideas, frameworks, and initiatives presented through Planetary Citizens did not emerge overnight, nor are they the product of a single revelation, ideology, or organization. They are the result of a lifetime of inquiry, experience, observation, service, and synthesis. The AI-Human partnership I’ve created with Citi-Zen helped craft this website. Another more recent partnership offers a way toward peace with precision.
In 1975, as an eighteen-year-old college student, I experienced what many would describe as a profound spiritual awakening. It fundamentally altered my perception of life, humanity, and our relationship with one another and the cosmos. While the experience itself was deeply personal, its enduring impact was a lifelong commitment to understanding a simple question:
How do human beings learn to live in greater harmony with themselves, each other, and the planet?
Over the decades that followed, that question guided an exploration across many disciplines and experiences: education, business, organizational development, leadership, systems thinking, consciousness studies, community building, media production, nonprofit service, and personal transformation. Along the way, I encountered remarkable teachers, thinkers, authors, scientists, spiritual leaders, innovators, and everyday citizens whose insights helped shape my understanding of how individuals and societies evolve.
A recurring pattern emerged. Whether examining human development, organizations, communities, ecosystems, or civilizations, the same principle appeared repeatedly:
Alignment precedes stability. Coherence precedes flourishing.
This understanding was reinforced through decades of work as an educator, facilitator, entrepreneur, author, coach, and community builder. Again and again, I witnessed that lasting change does not come from force, ideology, or control. It emerges when people, purpose, and systems find meaningful alignment.
My wife, Luba, has been an essential part of this journey. We met at her Kundalini yoga teacher training graduation in Scottsdale, Arizona on October 30, 2016. I’d been divorced for 30 years. We recognized each other immediately at a depth neither one of us fully understood at the time. We’re closer now, yet this mission draws out the best in each of us.
Born and educated in the former Soviet Union, a piano pedagogue graduate of Mussorgsky College, before immigrating to the United States, she brings a perspective shaped by music as well as both Eastern and Western cultural traditions. Our partnership reflects a living bridge between worlds that history and politics have often portrayed as separate or opposed.
Together, we have come to view our relationship as part of a larger experiment in human coherence—a Russian-American partnership rooted not in politics, but in shared humanity, mutual respect, creativity, service, and a commitment to peace. Through music, education, cultural exchange, and countless conversations spanning cultures and generations, we have witnessed firsthand the power of relationship to transcend division.
Her encouragement, patience, wisdom, and unwavering support have helped sustain this vision through periods of uncertainty, growth, and transformation. In many ways, Planetary Citizens reflects not only my experiences, but our shared belief that humanity’s future depends upon discovering the common field that unites us while honoring the unique gifts each culture, nation, and individual contributes to the whole.
We often refer to this as a Unified Field Mission—not merely as a philosophical idea, but as a lived experience of recognizing the deeper connections that already exist beneath our differences. It is a commitment to demonstrating that cooperation, understanding, and mutual flourishing are possible when we begin with our common humanity.
In the early 2000s, this journey led me to the pioneering work of Donald Keys and the original Planetary Citizens initiative. Keys recognized decades ago that humanity had already become a planetary species, yet our institutions, identities, and systems had not fully evolved to reflect that reality. His vision resonated deeply and provided an important historical foundation for what would later become my own contribution.
Over time, it became clear that the challenges facing humanity—social, environmental, economic, technological, and cultural—could not be solved through fragmented thinking alone. They require greater coherence across individuals, organizations, communities, nations, and ultimately the planetary system itself.
Planetary Citizens is my effort to contribute to that ongoing evolution.
Founded as a nonprofit public charity in 2023, Planetary Citizens seeks to serve as an educational, collaborative, and practical platform for exploring how humanity can cultivate greater awareness, responsibility, stewardship, and cooperation while honoring the diversity of perspectives that make us human.
This organization does not claim to possess all the answers. We do have a tool to find them for achieving alignment and coherence in the world within a generation, when applied.
It is not aligned with any political party, religious doctrine, or ideological agenda. It is an evolving framework, informed by decades of learning and engagement, dedicated to encouraging meaningful dialogue, responsible action, and the development of conditions that support a thriving future for all.
The concepts shared here represent my best understanding at this point in a lifelong journey of inquiry. Some are supported by established science, some arise from systems thinking and practical experience, and some reflect personal observations that continue to evolve through exploration and dialogue.
My commitment is simple:
- To remain intellectually honest.
- To distinguish observation from interpretation.
- To acknowledge uncertainty where it exists.
- To continue learning.
- To contribute, in whatever ways I can, to a more coherent, compassionate, and sustainable world.
Planetary Citizens is not about following one person.
It is about recognizing that humanity’s future will be shaped by our collective capacity to align wisdom with action, diversity with unity, and freedom with responsibility.
In many ways, Planetary Citizens is the continuation of a calling that began in my youth, matured through decades of experience, and found renewed purpose through partnerships with extraordinary people around the world—including my wife, Luba, whose journey from Russia to America serves as a living reminder that bridges are built person by person, relationship by relationship, and heart by heart, long before they are reflected in institutions.
If you find value in that aspiration, welcome.
Together, we continue the journey.
